China’s Luckin Coffee opens its first high-end store

Luckin Coffee, the Chinese coffee giant, has recently made a strategic move by opening its first flagship store in the southern city of Shenzhen, directly challenging Starbucks’ high-end roastery chain. The Luckin Coffee Origin Flagship in Shenzhen offers premium drinks, a departure from its usual affordable offerings. The flagship store features a variety of pour-over and cold brew coffee drinks, with beans sourced from Brazil, Ethiopia, and China’s Yunnan province. Additionally, customers can enjoy specialty drinks like the “tiramisu latte” with a pastry on top, showcasing Luckin’s commitment to providing unique and high-quality beverages.

The 420-square-meter store highlights the intense competition in China’s coffee market, where Starbucks has been a dominant player. With over 8,000 stores in China, Starbucks faces competition from various boutique cafes and chains offering more affordable options. In contrast, Luckin reported a revenue of $1.55 billion for the three months ending Sept. 30, 2025, representing a nearly 48% increase from the previous year.

While Starbucks reported a 6% year-on-year increase in China net revenue, Luckin’s aggressive expansion strategy has enabled it to reach milestones such as opening its 30,000th store in Shenzhen. Starbucks, on the other hand, has around 16,900 stores in the U.S., its largest market.

Looking ahead, Luckin’s CEO Jinyi Guo hinted at plans to relist the company in the U.S., following its delisting in 2020. The company has also engaged in collaborations with popular brands and has focused on building a strong user base through its smartphone ordering app.
