Chris Chalk on Playing Dick Hallorann

SPOILER ALERT: This article contains spoilers from Season 1, Episode 3 of “It: Welcome to Derry,” now available on HBO Max.

When Chris Chalk made his debut in Episode 2 of HBO’s “It: Welcome to Derry” as Dick Hallorann, fans of horror likely noted the connection to the character with the same name from “The Shining.” Episode 3 confirms that this is more than just a nod to another Stephen King classic, as the young Black soldier showcases his unique powers in a thrilling and terrifying sequence. Chalk brings a sense of dignity and intensity to the character of Hallorann, setting him apart from previous portrayals in the franchise.

Dick Hallorann was first introduced in 1977 as a magical character with psychic abilities similar to Danny Torrance in Stephen King’s novel “The Shining.” While Hallorann plays a significant role in the book and its sequel, “Doctor Sleep,” he also makes a brief appearance in the 1986 novel “It.” Chalk admits that he had to revisit the source material to fully embody the character under the guidance of writer, director, and executive producer Andy Muschietti.

In “It: Welcome to Derry,” Hallorann’s character is expanded upon from the intermittent flashbacks in the novel. Chalk’s portrayal of Hallorann departs from past iterations of the character, addressing contemporary criticisms of the token Black character trope often associated with Hallorann in “The Shining.” The show features a diverse cast of Black characters, each with their own arcs and importance to the narrative, avoiding the pitfalls of outdated stereotypes.

The racial commentary in “Welcome to Derry” is evident, exploring themes of racial violence and segregation in the 1960s setting. Hallorann’s abilities come to the forefront as he assists in uncovering an ancient power beneath Derry, leading to a chilling sequence in Episode 3 where he guides a helicopter through a psychic realm. Chalk’s performance captures the intensity and complexity of Hallorann’s psychic abilities, drawing inspiration from real-world examples of mysticism.

As Hallorann navigates his psychic realm, confronting dark and unknown forces, the line between reality and nightmare blurs. The sequence culminates in a thrilling mix of action and mystery, showcasing the actors’ dedication to their roles. By the end of the episode, Hallorann and Hanlon may prove crucial in combating the town’s terrifying curse, with their unique abilities offering a defense against Pennywise’s reign of fear.

Chalk commends the show’s creators for their courage in tackling themes of racism in a genre setting, adding layers of horror to an honest portrayal of reality. By grounding the narrative in truth and adding elements of terror, “It: Welcome to Derry” promises to resonate with audiences seeking a unique and thought-provoking viewing experience.
