Chris Russo rants how Yankees messed up not hiring Terry Francona in Aaron Boone takedown

The New York Yankees are currently facing a challenging season, and many fans are questioning the leadership of manager Aaron Boone. Chris “Mad Dog” Russo, a former WFAN host, believes that the Yankees missed an opportunity by not hiring Terry Francona, a key figure from the 2004 season, as their manager instead of extending Boone’s contract.

Russo expressed his frustration on “The Show” podcast, criticizing Boone’s performance and comparing him unfavorably to Francona. He pointed out that Francona, who led the Boston Red Sox to two championships in 2004 and 2007, is a more experienced and successful manager than Boone. Russo listed several other managers in the league whom he believes are better than Boone, including Alex Cora, Bruce Bochy, Dave Roberts, Tory Luvullo, A.J. Hinch, and Craig Counsell.

While Russo’s suggestion to hire Francona may seem appealing, the timeline and logistics do not align with the Yankees’ decision-making process. Francona was hired by the Cincinnati Reds before the end of the Yankees’ season, and Boone still had one year left on his contract at that time. The Yankees ultimately decided to extend Boone’s contract through the 2027 season, citing his passion for the team and the support of players like Aaron Judge.

Despite Boone’s positive attributes, the pressure is on as the Yankees struggle to secure a playoff spot. They currently hold a slim lead in the AL wild-card race and have fallen behind in the AL East standings. Missing the playoffs for the second time in three years would be a significant disappointment for a team with championship aspirations.

As the season progresses, all eyes will be on Boone and the Yankees as they try to turn their fortunes around and secure a spot in the postseason. The debate over Boone’s managerial abilities will continue, but for now, the focus remains on the team’s performance on the field.
