Chrysler recalls 320,000 SUVs, telling owners to park outside over battery fire risk
Chrysler has issued a recall for 320,065 Jeep Wranglers and Grand Cherokees due to a potential risk of high-voltage battery failure, which could result in a fire while the vehicle is parked or in motion. The affected models include the Jeep Wrangler 4Xe for model years 2000-2025 and the Grand Cherokee 4Xe from 2022-2026.
Owners are advised to park the vehicles outside and away from structures and refrain from charging them until a fix is implemented. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has stated that a remedy is currently in development, with Chrysler owner Stellantis assuring that a solution will be available soon. The company has urged affected customers to take precautions by parking their vehicles away from structures or other vehicles until the issue is addressed.
According to the recall notice, an estimated 5% of the affected vehicles may have the defect, with 19 reports of fires linked to the batteries and one reported injury. Owners are reminded not to charge their vehicles until the remedy is completed. Chrysler has announced that notification letters will be sent out on Dec. 2, with additional communication to follow once the fix is ready.
The recall stems from high-voltage battery packs in the Jeep Wranglers and Grand Cherokees that were manufactured with cells susceptible to damage, posing a risk of vehicle fires. Owners can contact Chrysler customer service at 800-853-1403 for more information, with the recall number being 68C.
In conclusion, owners of the affected Jeep models should take the necessary precautions outlined by Chrysler and await further instructions on how to address the high-voltage battery issue. The safety of vehicle occupants and surrounding structures is of utmost importance, and owners are encouraged to follow the manufacturer’s guidance until the remedy is completed.
