CME halts FX, commodities, futures trading after data center issue

Trading at the Chicago Mercantile Exchange came to a halt on Friday due to a cooling issue at one of its data centers, impacting traders worldwide. Services were gradually being restored, with bonds and metals resuming trading, while individual stocks were still in premarket trading. The CME announced that stock futures and options trading would fully open at 8:30 a.m. ET, but the FX Spot Plus market would remain halted.

The organization stated that it may take some time for moves in the affected contracts to be visible once the outage is resolved. Globex futures and options markets, EBS markets, and BMD markets were all affected. The CME, known as the largest exchange operator in the world, trades futures and options across various asset classes.

A spokesperson for CyrusOne, based in Dallas, Texas, mentioned that they were actively addressing a cooling system issue at their CHI1 data center in the Chicago area, impacting customers like CME Group. They assured that their teams were working diligently to restore full cooling capacity and apologized for any disruption caused.

Emir Syazwan, a futures trader at Ninefold Trading Co. in Kuala Lumpur, shared his experience during the outage, emphasizing the impact on traders in the Asian and European sessions. He noted that the markets had been relatively flat since the issue arose and expected this behavior to continue until resolved.

This incident is not the first time electronic trading has been affected, with previous technical issues causing disruptions in different markets. Despite the challenges, Syazwan mentioned that his trades remained unaffected as he had prepared for potential market consolidation.

Overall, the cooling issue at the CME data center has caused significant disruptions, highlighting the importance of robust infrastructure and contingency plans in the financial markets. Stay tuned for further updates as the situation unfolds.
