Common’s journey from Bulls ball boy to NBA theme song composer

Common Composes Official Theme Song for NBA on Prime

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Common, the renowned rapper-actor, has come full circle from his days as a ball boy for the Chicago Bulls to now composing the official theme song for NBA on Prime, Amazon’s exclusive NBA coverage platform. Teaming up with longtime collaborators Karriem Riggins and James Poyser, Common has created “Victory,” a song that captures the essence and energy of basketball.

Reflecting on his inspiration for the song, Common shared, “Basketball has a soul to it. It’s nostalgic but forward. The rhythm, the harmony, the movement, the teamwork, the star player. We wanted to capture all that in sound.”

After receiving the opportunity to work with Amazon as a composer, Common described the experience as a perfect partnership, highlighting the importance of staying true to his craft and being open to new opportunities.

“Victory” will serve as the signature sound of NBA on Prime, with three versions of the score created, including orchestral, hip-hop, and rock. Recorded with a 70-piece orchestra in Nashville, the song is set to debut on October 24 during Prime Video’s opening-night doubleheader.

Poyser emphasized the importance of creating a memorable melody that resonates with fans long after the broadcast, aiming for a tune that people can hum along to effortlessly.

With a focus on authenticity and capturing the essence of the game, Prime Video executive Amina Hussein expressed the platform’s commitment to creating a “sonic identity” that aligns with the culture of basketball. The goal is to make viewers feel like they are part of the broadcast, immersing them in the game-day experience.

For Common, the project represents a fulfillment of destiny, bridging his love for basketball with his passion for music. Growing up immersed in the world of basketball, including being a ball boy for the Bulls and witnessing Michael Jordan’s early games, Common now feels like a part of NBA history in a way that aligns with his musical journey.

Looking ahead, the collaborators behind “Victory” hope to inspire future generations and pave the way for more artists of color in sports scoring. Common envisions a future where young artists see the possibilities and opportunities available to them in the world of composing for sports.
