Congressional intern killed in Washington, DC shooting: Officials

The tragic incident that took place on Monday night in Northwest Washington, D.C., resulted in the death of a 21-year-old congressional intern, Eric Tarpinian-Jachym. Originally from Granby, Massachusetts, Tarpinian-Jachym was a rising senior at the University of Massachusetts at Amherst, majoring in finance with a minor in political science. He had been interning for Rep. Ron Estes (R-Kan.) since June.

The shooting, which occurred around 10:28 p.m. near the intersection of 7th and M Street, was targeted but Tarpinian-Jachym was not among the intended victims. Multiple suspects emerged from a vehicle and opened fire on a group of people, resulting in Tarpinian-Jachym, an adult female, and a 16-year-old male being struck. While the other two victims were conscious when police arrived, Tarpinian-Jachym was found unconscious. All three were taken to local hospitals, where Tarpinian-Jachym tragically succumbed to his injuries on Tuesday.

Rep. Estes and his wife, Susan, expressed their condolences to the Tarpinian-Jachym family, remembering Eric for his kind heart and cheerful demeanor in the office. Rep. Estes has been serving the Kansas 4th Congressional District since 2017 and is actively involved in various committees and subcommittees in Congress.

The Metropolitan Police Department is offering a reward of up to $25,000 for information leading to the arrest and conviction of those responsible for the shooting. Anyone with information is urged to contact the police at (202) 727-9099 or text tips to 50411.

This tragic incident serves as a reminder of the senseless violence that plagues our communities and the importance of coming together to support one another in times of tragedy. Our thoughts and prayers are with the Tarpinian-Jachym family during this difficult time.
