Connecticut son Sebastian Van Stockum beats mother Laura Williams to death with hammer, then runs off into woods screaming for ‘Mama’
A tragic incident unfolded in a luxurious family home in New Canaan, Connecticut, when a 20-year-old man, Sebastian Van Stockum, bludgeoned his mother, Laura Williams, to death with a hammer. The horrifying event took place on Oct. 24, leading to Van Stockum’s arrest by the police.
The authorities responded to a call reporting a man shouting for his “mama” from the woods behind the house. Van Stockum himself called 911, confessing to killing his mother. When the officers arrived at the scene, they found Van Stockum covered in blood, with his mother suffering from severe head wounds and a cracked skull. Tragically, despite the first responders’ efforts to revive her, Williams succumbed to her injuries.
Van Stockum admitted to the officers that he had used his fists, a knife, and a hammer in the attack, claiming that he was not mentally well. He was taken into custody and charged with murder, with his mugshot showing signs of the violent altercation.
During his court appearance, the state attorney described the murder as “especially violent,” emphasizing the brutal nature of the crime. Van Stockum’s defense lawyer expressed shock at the situation, stating that it was unexpected and tragic.
The victim, Laura Williams, was a single mother who worked as a high-end antique dealer. She was described as a talented writer and artist who had a background in film production. Williams had moved to New York City, where she met Sebastian’s father, but the two never married. The motive behind Van Stockum’s actions remains unclear.
Van Stockum is currently held on a $2 million bond, awaiting his next court appearance. If found guilty, he faces a minimum of 25 years in prison for the heinous crime. The family and community are left grappling with the aftermath of this senseless tragedy, trying to make sense of the incomprehensible loss.
