Convicted murderer Derrick Groves eludes law enforcement as last New Orleans jail escapee on the run

After nearly two months since 10 inmates escaped from a New Orleans jail by crawling through a hole behind a toilet, authorities have managed to recapture all but one of the fugitives: Derrick Groves.

Following the May 16 jailbreak, law enforcement swiftly tracked down three escapees within 24 hours and most of the others within the next few weeks. However, Groves, who has the most violent rap sheet among the escapees, has managed to evade capture so far.

The 28-year-old native of New Orleans was convicted last year of killing two people during a family block party feud with rival drug dealers. He now faces life imprisonment without parole, but administrative delays have kept him in jail for years rather than being transferred to a more secure prison facility.

Authorities are concerned about Groves’ potential for causing harm, with Forrest Ladd, an Orleans Parish assistant district attorney who prosecuted him, stating, “He’s got nothing to lose.” This makes Groves a dangerous individual, especially given his violent history.

Experts suggest that it is highly likely that Groves will eventually be recaptured, as more than 90% of escapees from correctional facilities in the US are typically apprehended within a year. Bryce Peterson, an adjunct professor of criminal justice at John Jay College, believes that Groves will be caught due to the high level of media attention on the case.

Groves’ ability to avoid law enforcement for an extended period is attributed to his intelligence and charisma, according to multiple defense attorneys and prosecutors who have worked with him. Additionally, a former jail employee who became Groves’ girlfriend during his incarceration is accused of aiding in his escape by arranging unmonitored phone calls.

Despite the widespread skepticism towards law enforcement in the city, stemming from past abuses, Groves’ family has urged him to turn himself in. His aunt, Jasmine Groves, expressed the family’s ordeal following the escape and the constant surveillance they are under by law enforcement.

Groves’ criminal history includes involvement in four killings over an 18-month period, with the most recent conviction being for the murder of two individuals during a family block party. Witnesses in cases involving Groves have faced intimidation and physical attacks, making it challenging for them to testify against him.

Overall, the search for Derrick Groves continues, with a $50,000 reward for information leading to his recapture. Despite the challenges and complexities surrounding his case, authorities remain determined to bring him back into custody.
