Costco’s Pepsi-to-Coke switch goes viral as members sound off
Costco caused a stir with its decision to switch from Pepsi to Coca-Cola, sparking a viral debate among members of the warehouse club. Some welcomed the change, while others lamented the loss of Pepsi in their favorite food court items.
Costco CEO Ron Vachris announced the switch back to Coca-Cola earlier this year, with the transition rolling out gradually in July. By fall, all food courts at Costco warehouses will exclusively offer Coca-Cola products.
Food courts play a significant role in attracting members to Costco, with the soda switch triggering a larger cultural response than anticipated. The Coke vs. Pepsi rivalry holds deep-seated memories and traditions for many, making Costco’s decision more than just a simple beverage swap.
Manhattan-based psychotherapist Jonathan Alpert explained the strong emotional response to the soda switch, likening it to cultural rivalries like Yankees vs. Red Sox or Apple vs. PC. People’s attachment to brands goes beyond just the product itself, encompassing memories, traditions, and personal identity.
