Dad recalls horrific moment 10-year-old son was attacked by shark in Florida
The sun was shining brightly on that August Saturday when Mary and Jameson Reeder decided to take their four children out to Looe Key Reef for a day of swimming and snorkeling in the clear waters of the Florida Keys. Little did they know that this family outing would turn into a harrowing experience that would test their faith and resilience.
As the children frolicked in the water, 10-year-old Jameson Jr. decided to explore the seabed with a GoPro camera. Suddenly, screams pierced the air, and Jameson Sr. rushed to his son’s aid. What he saw was a sight that no parent should ever have to witness – his son’s leg severely mangled, with bone exposed from knee to ankle.
The family realized it was a shark attack, a terrifying and surreal moment as they were still nine miles offshore with no immediate medical help available. With the nearest hospital 20 miles away, Mary and Jameson were faced with the horrifying prospect of losing their son.
Fortunately, help arrived in the form of other boaters, including a nurse who bravely swam to their aid despite the presence of blood in the water. Racing back to shore, Mary feared for her son’s life as he had lost a significant amount of blood.
Upon reaching the marina, Jameson was quickly airlifted to Nicklaus Children’s Hospital in Miami for emergency treatment. The extent of his injuries was severe, with doctors unable to save his leg due to the extensive damage caused by the shark.
As the family grappled with the aftermath of the attack, they were shocked to discover that it was a bull shark, a massive predator that had silently approached them in the water. Through footage captured by Jameson Jr.’s GoPro camera, they were able to piece together the events of that fateful day.
Despite the trauma and physical challenges, Jameson showed incredible courage and resilience. He underwent multiple surgeries and eventually received a prosthetic leg, determined to not let the shark attack define his life.
The Reeders’ faith played a significant role in their journey to recovery, with Jameson Jr. believing that he saw Jesus standing by him during his darkest moments. His miraculous survival and unwavering spirit inspired his family and those around him.
Months after the attack, Jameson returned to the water, surfing and engaging in activities he loved. On the anniversary of the incident, the family bravely returned to Looe Key Reef, facing their fears and embracing life’s challenges with renewed strength and gratitude.
The Reeder family’s story is a testament to the power of faith, resilience, and the unwavering bond of love that can conquer even the most terrifying of circumstances.
