Dana Shepherd sentenced to 45 years in prison for brutal 1993 rape and murder

A 53-year-old man named Dana Shepherd was recently sentenced to 45 years in prison for the rape, stabbing, and murder of 19-year-old Carmen Van Huss more than 30 years ago. This sentencing marks the closing of a decades-old cold case that had haunted the Indianapolis community for years.

Shepherd signed a plea deal last month, admitting to the heinous crime that took place in 1993. Van Huss was brutally raped and stabbed 61 times in her apartment, leaving her lifeless body to be discovered by her father. The scene was described as a horrifying sight, with signs of a struggle evident throughout the apartment.

After more than three decades, Missouri police were able to apprehend Shepherd, who was extradited to Indianapolis to face charges of murder and rape with deadly force. Despite being 20 years old at the time of the murder, Shepherd had managed to evade suspicion until DNA testing connected him to the case.

The Van Huss family expressed their relief and gratitude for the resolution of the case, stating that while the plea deal may not have been their preferred outcome, they are thankful that justice is finally being served after 33 years. Shepherd had a prior criminal history in Indiana, including charges for battery and public intoxication, as well as additional charges in Missouri post-1993.

The family acknowledged that nothing can undo the loss of Carmen or erase the injustice of Shepherd living freely for so long, but they find solace in the fact that the truth has come to light and that he is finally being held accountable for his actions. The sentencing of Dana Shepherd brings closure to a long-standing mystery and provides some semblance of justice for Carmen Van Huss and her loved ones.
