Dangerous snowstorm headed toward NYC, New Jersey, upstate New York: Latest forecast

A Winter Storm Blankets the Northeast in Snow

The post-Christmas travel season has taken a dangerous turn in the Northeast as a major winter storm sweeps through the region. New York City is bracing for the most snow it has seen in years, with heavy snowfall expected to impact several states in the area.

Flight cancellations have been rampant, with nearly 800 flights grounded on Friday alone. New York City’s airports and the Detroit Metro Airport have been hit the hardest, causing disruptions for travelers during this busy holiday season.

The storm initially hit the Midwest, leaving a layer of ice on roads in Wisconsin and Michigan. Drivers are urged to exercise caution as they navigate the slippery conditions brought on by freezing rain.

As the storm moves eastward, Pennsylvania is next in line to experience the brunt of the weather. An ice storm warning is in effect for parts of western Pennsylvania, affecting nearly 1 million residents. The entire state is expected to be covered in ice, making road travel extremely treacherous.

On the northern side of the storm, where temperatures are cold enough for snow instead of ice, heavy snowfall is anticipated in New York, eastern Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Connecticut, western Massachusetts, and Rhode Island.

The snow is forecasted to begin in western New York on Friday morning and reach New York City by 5 p.m. The heavy snowfall will significantly reduce visibility and create hazardous travel conditions throughout the region.

Overnight, the snow will continue, tapering off in New York City by 9 a.m. The city is expected to receive approximately 7 inches of snow, marking the most significant snowfall in nearly four years.

A winter storm warning has been issued for the tristate region, with upstate New York potentially seeing 6 to 9 inches of snow and the Hudson Valley expecting up to 10 inches. Northern New Jersey could receive 5 to 8 inches, while Hartford, Connecticut, is forecasted to get around 4 inches.

Philadelphia and Baltimore are also in the storm’s path, with Philadelphia expecting 1 to 3 inches of a sleet and snow mix, along with a glaze of ice. Baltimore residents should also prepare for icy road conditions.

This winter storm serves as a reminder to stay safe and be prepared for inclement weather as we navigate the holiday season in the Northeast.
