DC National Guard shooting follows months of Democrats’ stoking fear about an ‘invasion’

The recent ambush attack on two National Guard troops outside a Washington DC Metro station has reignited the debate surrounding the deployment of National Guard troops in crime-ridden cities. For months, left-leaning politicians have been vocal in their opposition to the presence of National Guard troops in Democrat-run cities, labeling it as authoritarian and an invasion.

In August, Rep. Jamie Raskin accused President Trump of using a “textbook authoritarian maneuver” when he announced plans to deploy the National Guard to Washington DC. Similarly, Illinois Gov. J.B. Pritzker criticized the president for staging an “invasion” of his state and warned against the militarization of American cities.

Michigan Sen. Elissa Slotkin expressed her concerns about the possibility of federal troops shooting at American civilians during a television appearance. DC Mayor Muriel Bowser criticized the deployment of National Guard troops in her city, calling it an authoritarian push by Trump. Rep. Maxine Waters went as far as to claim that Trump’s actions were leading the nation into a civil war.

Democratic Maryland Sen. Chris Van Hollen also joined the chorus of voices condemning the National Guard deployment, calling it a total abuse of power and a manufactured emergency. Despite these criticisms, President Trump declared a crime emergency in Washington DC on August 11, vowing to rid the city of crime and calling up federal law enforcement for assistance.

Since the declaration, Democrats have continued to undermine the administration’s efforts, with some even comparing the use of National Guard and ICE agents to Gestapo tactics. The recent ambush near the White House, allegedly carried out by a 29-year-old Afghan national who arrived in the US during the chaotic Afghanistan withdrawal, has only fueled the debate further.

The gunman, identified as Rahmanullah Lakanwal, opened fire on the National Guard troops before being shot four times and taken into custody by law enforcement. Republicans have pointed out the connection between the Democrats’ rhetoric and the ambush, emphasizing that words have real consequences.

As the debate over the deployment of National Guard troops in crime-ridden cities continues, it is essential to consider the implications of such actions and the impact they can have on public safety and national security.
