Deadly listeria outbreak linked to chicken alfredo fettucine sold at Kroger and Walmart

Listeria Outbreak Linked to Recall of Chicken Fettucine Alfredo Products

A recent listeria food poisoning outbreak has resulted in three deaths and one pregnancy loss, with at least 17 individuals affected across 13 states. The outbreak, which began in July of last year, has led to 16 hospitalizations.

FreshRealm, a major food producer based in California, Georgia, and Indiana, is recalling products manufactured before June 17. FreshRealm, Inc.

The recall includes various heat-and-eat chicken fettucine alfredo products sold in the refrigerated sections of Kroger and Walmart stores:

  • 32.8-ounce trays of Marketside Grilled Chicken Alfredo with Fettucine
  • 12.3-ounce trays of Marketside Grilled Chicken Alfredo with Fettucine
  • 12.5-ounce trays of Home Chef Heat & Eat Chicken Fettucine Alfredo

The specific source of contamination has not yet been identified, but the listeria strain responsible for the outbreak was discovered in a sample of chicken fettucine alfredo during a routine inspection in March.

Consumers are advised not to consume these products and should either discard them or return them to the place of purchase. Listeria infections can have serious consequences, especially for vulnerable populations such as older adults, individuals with weakened immune systems, pregnant women, and newborns.

Symptoms of listeria infection include fever, muscle aches, headache, stiff neck, confusion, loss of balance, and convulsions. It is estimated that about 1,600 people are affected by listeria infections each year, resulting in approximately 260 deaths.

Health officials are actively monitoring the situation and are urging caution to prevent further cases of contamination. Stay informed and prioritize food safety to protect yourself and your loved ones.
