Delaware trooper killed at DMV remembered as dependable following tragic death

Delaware State Trooper Cpl. Matthew “Ty” Snook was tragically shot and killed while on duty at a DMV office near Wilmington. The 34-year-old officer, described as dependable and professional on the job, pushed a nearby employee to safety before being shot by a 44-year-old gunman. Despite his heroic efforts, Snook succumbed to his injuries at the hospital, as did the gunman who was shot by another officer.

Snook, a native of Delaware, leaves behind his wife and their 1-year-old daughter. A graduate of the University of Maryland and a member of the wrestling team, he had been a dedicated trooper for 10 years. State police praised Snook as a trusted partner, beloved community member, and extended condolences to his family for their loss.

A fund has been set up to support Snook’s family, describing him as a loving husband, devoted father, and cherished friend. Known for his steady presence, kindness, and unwavering commitment to his loved ones, Snook’s priority was always his family.

The motive behind the shooting has not been disclosed, and authorities have not publicly identified the gunman. Delaware Governor Matt Meyer condemned the act as pure evil and commended the heroism of the troopers and officers involved in the response.

In honor of Cpl. Snook, the state DMV temporarily closed its offices statewide, with plans to reopen all but the site of the shooting on Monday. The community mourns the loss of a dedicated officer who made the ultimate sacrifice in the line of duty.
