Democrat Taylor Rehmet flips GOP-held Texas state Senate seat in special election

In a surprising turn of events, Democrat Taylor Rehmet emerged victorious in a special election for the Texas state Senate, flipping a traditionally Republican district that President Donald Trump had previously won by a significant margin in 2024. Rehmet, a labor union leader and veteran, defeated Republican Leigh Wambsganss, a conservative activist, in the Fort Worth-area district. With nearly all votes counted, Rehmet held a comfortable lead of over 14 percentage points.

This win for Rehmet adds to the Democrats’ string of successful performances in special elections during this cycle. Many Democrats believe that this victory is a clear indication that voters under the second Trump administration are motivated to reject GOP candidates and their policies. Democratic National Committee Chairman Ken Martin even went as far as to call it “a warning sign to Republicans across the country.”

Although Rehmet’s victory only allows him to serve until early January, he will need to win the November general election to secure the seat for a full four-year term. The Texas Legislature is not scheduled to reconvene until 2027, at which point the GOP will still hold a comfortable majority.

President Trump took to social media earlier on Saturday to rally support for Wambsganns, describing her as a successful entrepreneur and a staunch supporter of his Make America Great Again movement. However, Rehmet received backing from national organizations such as the DNC and VoteVets, a veterans group that reportedly spent $500,000 on ads in support of his campaign.

The vacant seat was previously held by Kelly Hancock, a four-term GOP incumbent who resigned to take a statewide office. Hancock had consistently won elections each time he ran for the office, and the district had been held by a Republican for decades.

Democrats have been encouraged by their electoral performance since Trump’s return to the White House. In recent major Election Day contests, the party dominated in governor’s races in Virginia and New Jersey. Additionally, Democratic candidates have secured victories in special elections in Kentucky and Iowa. While Republican Matt Van Epps won a Tennessee special election for a U.S. House seat, the narrow margin of victory has given Democrats hope for the upcoming midterms.

Overall, Rehmet’s unexpected win in the Texas state Senate special election serves as a reminder of the shifting political landscape and the potential challenges facing the GOP in future elections.
