Democratic senator says GOP is trying to woo Fetterman
BUCKS COUNTY, Pennsylvania — Democratic Senator Ruben Gallego of Arizona has spoken out against Republican attempts to pull Senator John Fetterman to the right, urging Democrats to stand by Fetterman despite mounting questions about his health and evolving political stance.
In an interview on Saturday, Gallego emphasized the importance of unity within the Democratic caucus, stating, “There needs to be space for Fetterman and for other senators in our caucus. He still fights for working-class people, and we can find common ground even if we don’t always see eye to eye.”
While some Democrats have distanced themselves from Fetterman amid concerns about his well-being, prominent Republicans like Senators Tom Cotton, Chuck Grassley, and Dave McCormick have come to his defense in response to reports about his mental and physical health.
Senator Cotton accused the “radical left” of launching attacks on Fetterman due to his pro-Israel stance, suggesting that Republicans are trying to lure Fetterman to their side. Gallego likened these tactics to “fuck-fuck games” from his time in the Marines, indicating that they are manipulative ploys.
Despite pressure from conservatives, Fetterman has reiterated his commitment to remaining a Democrat and has maintained his opposition to certain Republican-backed policies, such as Trump’s tax cuts. Gallego expressed confidence that Fetterman would continue to prioritize the interests of working-class families over partisan pressures.
While Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer has praised Fetterman’s performance, some House Democrats in Pennsylvania have expressed reservations following recent controversies. Fetterman’s firm stance on issues like Israel and his meeting with former President Trump have also sparked criticism from progressive groups.
During a town hall event in Pennsylvania, Gallego emphasized the importance of inclusivity within the Democratic Party, cautioning against exclusivity that could hinder electoral success. He defended his collaboration with individuals across the political spectrum, highlighting the need for a diverse coalition.
Gallego’s visit to Pennsylvania has fueled speculation about his potential presidential aspirations, with some viewing his trip as a strategic move for future campaigns. In an interview with NBC News, Gallego acknowledged the possibility of a White House run in the future but denied any immediate plans, underscoring his focus on his current role as a senator.
