Denver coffee roasters navigate tariff impacts, climate change

Denver coffee lovers may soon find themselves paying higher prices at their favorite local cafes due to import tariffs imposed by the Trump administration. The effects of these tariffs are now impacting local roasters in the area.

Mark Overly, the president and coffee buyer for Kaladi Coffee Roasters in Denver, expressed his concerns about the uncertainty facing the industry. Prices for green coffee, before roasting, have increased from $3.50-$5 per pound to $7-$8 per pound. This price hike is a result of the tariffs imposed on countries like China, Mexico, Colombia, and Canada, causing disruptions in the global coffee supply chain.

Jason Farrar, co-owner of Huckleberry Roasters, also highlighted the challenges faced by coffee roasters. The tariffs have led to a doubling in the price of retail bags, impacting the overall cost of goods for businesses like Huckleberry.

Both Kaladi and Huckleberry are working closely with suppliers and importers to navigate these challenges. The uncertainty in the industry is further exacerbated by the effects of climate change on coffee-growing regions.

Challenges and Solutions

The coffee industry is currently experiencing a “coffee crunch,” with prices doubling in the last year. Factors such as disruptions in production and extreme weather conditions in major coffee-producing countries like Brazil and Vietnam have contributed to this increase.

The International Coffee Organization’s Coffee Market Report highlighted the impact of tariffs on coffee prices, with the ICO Composite Indicator Price reaching $3.55 per pound in May 2025. This represents an 80% increase compared to the previous year.

Despite the challenges, both Kaladi and Huckleberry are committed to maintaining transparency with customers and suppliers. They are closely monitoring the situation and making adjustments to mitigate the impact of tariffs on their businesses.

While the future remains uncertain, both roasters are optimistic that coffee prices will eventually stabilize. They are focused on weathering the storm and providing their customers with the best possible coffee experience.
