Denver Mayor Mike Johnston delivers State of the City speech
Mayor Mike Johnston emphasized the importance of embracing a mindset of “learned hopefulness” in the face of challenges during his annual State of the City address on Monday night in Denver.
He envisioned Denver as a city where possibilities are endless, where collaboration and unity prevail, and where the community works together towards a common goal that transcends individual interests.
Johnston contrasted this hopeful outlook with the concept of “learned helplessness,” highlighting the importance of believing in the impact of collective efforts.
Addressing various issues such as homelessness, immigration, downtown revitalization, and climate change, Johnston also assured the audience of the Denver Broncos’ continued presence in the city.
Under his leadership, street homelessness has significantly decreased, with a 45% drop in unsheltered homelessness since 2023. While challenges persist, including budget constraints leading to city worker layoffs, Johnston remains committed to addressing these issues.
Public safety has seen improvements, with a notable decrease in the city’s homicide rate and reduced instances of auto theft and catalytic converter theft.
Reviving downtown Denver has been a priority, with the streamlining of the city’s permitting system to facilitate development projects and reduce associated costs.
Despite some tensions with the City Council, particularly regarding a proposed bond issue for infrastructure projects, Johnston remains focused on advancing the city’s progress and meeting the needs of its residents.
