Devers tells Red Sox he won’t move to 1B, tells front office to ‘do their jobs’

Rafael Devers, the designated hitter for the Boston Red Sox, made it clear that he has no interest in switching positions once again. After Triston Casas suffered a season-ending injury and the team approached Devers about playing first base, the three-time All-Star expressed his reluctance to make another switch.

Devers had previously moved from third base to DH during spring training when the Red Sox signed Alex Bregman to play third. Despite being a versatile player, Devers believes that he shouldn’t be expected to play every position on the field. He emphasized that he was asked to focus on DH during spring training and doesn’t think it would be appropriate for the team to ask him to play another position now.

While Devers did discuss the possibility of playing first base with Red Sox Chief Baseball Officer Craig Breslow, he ultimately feels that the team should look for another player to fill the position. Currently, Boston is using a platoon of Romy Gonzalez and Abraham Toro at first base.

Devers expressed frustration at the idea of taking over a position where he has no experience at the major league level. He suggested that the team should focus on finding a suitable replacement rather than asking him to make yet another position switch.

In summary, Devers is adamant about remaining a full-time DH and is not willing to change his stance on the matter. He feels that the team should honor their initial decision to have him focus on DH and not push him to take on unfamiliar positions. Devers’ commitment to his role as a hitter is clear, and he stands firm in his position on the matter.
