DHS says it’s suspending TSA PreCheck and Global Entry due to shutdown

The Department of Homeland Security has made the decision to temporarily suspend its TSA PreCheck and Global Entry programs due to a funding lapse within the agency. This move is unprecedented and is expected to impact travelers across the country.

DHS Secretary Kristi Noem stated that the agency will prioritize the general traveling population at airports and ports of entry, leading to the suspension of courtesy and special privilege escorts. The two programs, which offer expedited clearance processes for pre-vetted domestic and international travelers, are set to be suspended starting at 6 a.m. ET Sunday.

The personnel assigned to these programs will be redirected to assist the broader traveling public, resulting in longer lines and potential frustrations for travelers. This decision comes amidst a winter storm that has already caused the cancellation of over 5,000 flights nationwide. As flights resume, travelers can expect to face extended wait times in airport security lines, especially with the upcoming spring break travel rush.

Furthermore, the Federal Emergency Management Agency will halt all non-disaster related responses to prioritize disaster-related efforts, emphasizing the impact of the impending winter storm on the agency’s resources.

Democratic Rep. Bennie Thompson criticized the move, accusing President Trump and Secretary Noem of using the American people as pawns in their political games. He highlighted the benefits of TSA PreCheck and Global Entry in reducing airport lines and easing the burden on DHS staff, who are currently working without pay due to the government shutdown.

U.S. Travel, a non-profit organization representing the nation’s travel industry, expressed disappointment in the decision, emphasizing that travelers should be prioritized over political disputes. They stressed the importance of travel as a gateway to the American economy and urged elected leaders to resolve their differences to ensure a smooth travel experience for all Americans.

The temporary suspension of the TSA PreCheck and Global Entry programs was first reported by the Washington Post. Travelers are advised to plan accordingly and expect delays as they navigate through airport security checkpoints during this period of program suspension.
