DHS Secretary Kristi Noem confronted about veteran in contentious hearing over deportations
Department of Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem faced tough questioning from Democrats on Capitol Hill regarding the Trump administration’s strict immigration policies. During the hearing, Rep. Seth Magaziner raised concerns about the deportation of military veterans by DHS.
Magaziner highlighted the case of Sae Joon Park, a Purple Heart decorated U.S. Army veteran who was deported to South Korea due to a removal order issued by the Trump administration. Park, who served in Panama in 1989 and struggled with PTSD and substance abuse after his service, was deported despite being clean and sober for 14 years.
When asked if she would thank Park for his service, Secretary Noem expressed gratitude for all those who have served the country and followed the laws. However, a DHS spokesperson later clarified that Park had a criminal history and had received a final order of removal from an immigration judge in 2010.
In response to Magaziner’s inquiries, Secretary Noem committed to reviewing Park’s case. The congressman also introduced another veteran, Jim Brown, whose wife, a long-time resident of the U.S., was detained and faced deportation over a minor criminal record of writing two bad checks.
The hearing shed light on the complexities of immigration policies and the human impact of deportation on military veterans and their families. It underscored the need for a thorough review of individual cases to ensure that justice is served while upholding national security interests.
