Dick Cheney funeral draws big Dem names Biden, Harris, Maddow — while Trump and Vance get benched

Former Vice President Dick Cheney’s funeral on Thursday was a somber affair, attended by a mix of Democrats and Republicans who had clashed with him during his time in power. Notably absent from the guest list were President Trump and Vice President JD Vance, who were not invited to the service.

Among the mourners were prominent Democrats such as MSNBC anchor Rachel Maddow, former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, Democratic strategist James Carville, Rep. Jamie Raskin, Dr. Anthony Fauci, and former Vice President Al Gore. The front pew was filled with former President Joe Biden, ex-first lady Jill Biden, and former Vice President Kamala Harris, along with Cheney’s former boss, George W. Bush, who delivered a eulogy, and former Vice President Mike Pence.

On the Republican side, Senate Majority Leader John Thune attended the funeral, but House Speaker Mike Johnson was notably absent. The White House did not formally offer condolences to the Cheney family and only lowered flags at the executive mansion as required by law.

Liz Cheney, the former Vice President’s daughter, who played a key role in the investigation of Trump’s involvement in the Capitol riot on January 6, 2021, spoke at the funeral. She was joined by her father’s longtime cardiologist, who shared stories of Cheney’s resilience through health challenges.

Despite their past differences, Dick Cheney had endorsed Kamala Harris during her presidential campaign last year, citing Trump as a threat to democracy. Cheney’s words at the time reflected his belief that Trump’s actions posed a significant danger to the country.

The funeral was a moment of reflection and unity, as former adversaries came together to honor the legacy of a man who had played a significant role in shaping American politics.
