Diddy trial day 32 recap: Combs declines to testify

Sean “Diddy” Combs, the rap mogul who made his fortune with lyrics, made a bold move in his ongoing sex-trafficking trial by choosing not to take the stand. This decision came after prosecutors wrapped up their case against Combs, calling 34 witnesses over 28 days in an attempt to convince the jury that he used his business empire to coerce women into sex.

Facing the possibility of life in prison if convicted on all counts, Combs confidently told the judge that he would not be testifying. His lawyers then presented a brief case, focusing on evidence that they believe casts doubt on the testimony of the witnesses. They argued that the alleged victims actually consented to the sex parties known as “freak offs” or “hotel nights” that are at the center of the case.

The prosecution has alleged that Combs used his employees, wealth, and influence to pressure women into participating in these orgies and then silenced them through blackmail or threats. They claim that Combs orchestrated these events, watching and masturbating while his girlfriends engaged in sexual activities with male prostitutes.

Combs has pleaded not guilty to charges of sex trafficking, racketeering conspiracy, and transportation to engage in prostitution. His defense team rested their case after asking the judge for an acquittal, a routine motion in criminal cases that was not immediately ruled upon by the judge.

Both sides are expected to return to court to finalize jury instructions before closing statements are heard. Deliberations could begin as early as Friday, following the jury’s return to court on Thursday.

In a bid to have the case dismissed, Combs’ defense team argued that the evidence presented by the prosecution did not prove his guilt beyond a reasonable doubt. They contended that there was no evidence of conspiracy with others to violate the racketeering statute and that employees who assisted in setting up the sex parties did so as personal errands for Combs without knowledge of the activities taking place.

Throughout the trial, the defense has maintained that while Combs may have been involved in domestic violence and led an unconventional sex life, these actions do not constitute sex trafficking. They have consistently aimed to show that the prosecution failed to prove Combs engaged in any criminal behavior.

In a surprising move, the defense opted not to call any witnesses during their case, instead reading text messages from Combs’ longtime romantic partner, Cassie Ventura, expressing love and affection for him. They also highlighted discrepancies in witness testimony, suggesting that some statements made during the trial differed from initial accounts given to law enforcement.

While Combs’ defense strategy may seem unconventional, his legal team has used cross-examination and thorough questioning of prosecution witnesses to present their arguments to the jury. By focusing on positive interactions and messages exchanged between Combs and the alleged victims, they have sought to create doubt about the prosecution’s case.

As the trial nears its conclusion, the fate of Sean “Diddy” Combs rests in the hands of the jury, who will soon begin deliberations to determine his innocence or guilt in this high-profile case.
