Dog found abandoned in upstate NY apartment was ‘days from death’

An upsetting case of animal cruelty has come to light in upstate New York, where a pit bull mix named Rhett was found abandoned in an apartment in Kirkland, just outside Utica. The poor dog was in a dire state, described as “extremely emaciated” and dehydrated, with his ribs and spine visibly protruding through his thin, flea-infested fur. The heartbreaking discovery was made on May 16 by authorities from the Oneida County Sheriff’s Office.

Rhett was in such a weakened state that he was unable to stand on his own, indicating that he had been neglected and left without proper care for an extended period. Kindred Spirits Greyhound Adoption, the rescue organization that stepped in to help Rhett, described his condition as shocking and stated that he was likely only days away from death.

Following the rescue, Lindsay Meelan, a 36-year-old woman from Clark Mills, was arrested and charged with felony animal cruelty for her role in the neglect and abandonment of Rhett. She faces charges of aggravated cruelty to animals, as well as misdemeanor animal cruelty. Meelan was subsequently released and is scheduled to appear in Kirkland court on June 17 to answer to the charges brought against her.

Despite the grim circumstances, there is a glimmer of hope for Rhett. Thanks to the efforts of the rescue organization and the support of the community, Rhett has received emergency medical treatment, including a blood transfusion, to address his severe malnutrition, anemia, and flea infestation. After a week of intensive care, Rhett has shown signs of improvement and is now able to stand on his own.

The rescue group has launched a fundraiser to cover the costs of Rhett’s medical care, which has already raised nearly $6,000. The outpouring of support and love for Rhett has been overwhelming, and he has been moved to a foster home where he continues to receive the care and attention he needs to recover. While Rhett still has a long road ahead of him, his progress so far is a testament to the resilience and spirit of this sweet dog who has captured the hearts of everyone he meets.
