Duffer Brothers on ‘Stranger Things’ Theatrical Release
The Duffer brothers, Matt and Ross, are thrilled to announce that the upcoming theatrical release of “Stranger Things” is a dream come true for them. The two-hour series finale, titled “The Rightside Up,” will premiere on Netflix and in over 350 movie theaters on Dec. 31, starting at 5 p.m. PT / 8 p.m. ET, and will continue playing through Jan. 1. This marks a historic moment as it is the first time an episode of a Netflix series will be shown in theaters.
During the world premiere of the series’ fifth and final season at the TCL Chinese Theater in Hollywood, Ross expressed his excitement, stating, “This has been a dream of ours for a while.” This announcement came shortly after a Variety interview with Netflix’s chief content officer, Bela Bajaria, where she stated that there were no plans to release “Stranger Things” in theaters. However, the Duffer brothers revealed that Netflix approached them with the idea, and they were on board with the unique concept.
Matt praised Bajaria for her “poker face” and revealed that they had been working on this plan for a long time. He shared, “It was their idea to have the finale on a separate day, and we thought that was cool. We could pitch this movie theater idea, which we had never pitched before.” The brothers believe that this theatrical release will create a shared experience for fans, allowing everyone to watch the finale together at the same time.
Star Millie Bobby Brown made a statement with her black custom Rodarte gown at the premiere, describing it as an homage to the end of the series. She teased, “It’s for the funeral of the show. This dress embodies the darkness of the upcoming season. I’m really excited for everyone to see how dark it gets. This is definitely the darkest and most intense season yet.”
The premiere was attended by the cast members including Sadie Sink, Caleb McLaughlin, Finn Wolfhard, Gaten Matarazzo, and Noah Schnapp, who all looked stunning on the red carpet. Photos from the event captured the excitement and anticipation surrounding the final season of “Stranger Things.”
Overall, the Duffer brothers and the cast members are looking forward to the theatrical release of “Stranger Things” and are excited to share this special experience with fans. The series finale promises to be a thrilling conclusion to the beloved show, and the theatrical release adds an extra layer of excitement for viewers.
