Duke and QB Darian Mensah reach settlement to resolve legal fight over his transfer

Duke University and Darian Mensah have come to a resolution in their legal dispute over the quarterback’s transfer plans, allowing him to move forward with his decision to play elsewhere. The settlement was announced by both the school and Mensah’s agency, although specific details of the agreement were not disclosed. This development comes after Duke filed a lawsuit in an attempt to prevent Mensah from transferring to another school and securing a new contract to continue his college football career.

The case was set for a hearing in Durham County Superior Court, but the parties were able to reach a resolution before the scheduled date. Mensah, who had transferred from Tulane and helped lead Duke to an unexpected Atlantic Coast Conference title, had signed a two-season contract in July 2025 that granted exclusive rights to his name, image, and likeness related to his collegiate football endeavors.

In a statement, Duke University expressed its commitment to upholding the agreements made with student-athletes and emphasized the importance of enforcing these contracts for the stability and structure of athletic programs. The school acknowledged the challenging nature of taking legal action against a student and teammate but stated that it was necessary to ensure compliance with contractual obligations.

Mensah’s agency, Young Money APAA Sports, commended both parties for reaching a fair and mutually acceptable resolution. Duke had initially sought to prevent Mensah from entering the transfer portal and taking steps to enroll at another school, citing the arbitration clause in the contract as a requirement for resolving disputes.

Despite the legal battle, Mensah expressed gratitude to Duke University for engaging in constructive discussions and reaching a resolution. He reflected on the 2025 ACC championship victory as a significant moment in Duke football history and expressed pride in being a part of that accomplishment. The agency extended well wishes to the Blue Devils, Coach Manny Diaz, the staff, and the fan base for continued success in future seasons.

The resolution of this dispute marks a positive step forward for both Duke University and Darian Mensah, allowing him to pursue his collegiate football career elsewhere while honoring the contractual agreements made during his time at Duke.
