Durango’s Ska Brewing sold

Colorado Craft Beer Icon Ska Brewing Sold to Local Families
Colorado craft beer enthusiasts were shocked on Friday when Dave Thibodeau, co-founder of Ska Brewing in Durango 30 years ago, announced that the company has been acquired by two prominent Durango families – the Arianos and the Wests. These families have a long history in various businesses, including beer distribution.
Thibodeau expressed mixed emotions about the sale, acknowledging the changing landscape of the beer industry. He revealed that Ska had incurred significant debt for expansion plans that did not come to fruition. Despite the bittersweet nature of the sale, Thibodeau sees it as an opportunity to establish a solid foundation for the future.
Both Thibodeau and longtime executive Steve Breezley will continue to be part of the brewery, with Breezley taking on the role of CEO. Thibodeau assured fans that the brewery’s identity and legacy will remain intact.
The sale of Ska Brewing, as reported by The Durango Herald, is a reflection of the evolving dynamics within the craft beer industry. Established breweries like Great Divide and Dry Dock have also recently changed ownership, signaling a shift in the market.
Amidst these changes, Thibodeau emphasized the importance of adaptation and growth in maintaining a sustainable future for craft breweries. He remains optimistic about the opportunities that lie ahead for Ska Brewing and the Colorado craft beer scene.
Thibodeau concluded, “In Colorado, craft beer is an integral part of our culture. There are still avenues for expansion and enjoyment. Our goal is to preserve the positive legacy of Ska Brewing.”
Ska Brewing gained popularity in the 1990s and 2000s with iconic beers like Modus Hoperandi IPA and Pinstripe Red. Over the years, the brewery shifted its focus to lagers, including fan favorites like Ska Mexican Logger and Rue B. Soho Grapefruit Lager.
