Echo raises $35M to secure the enterprise cloud's base layer — container images — with autonomous AI agents

Enterprises are facing a critical bottleneck as they accelerate the deployment of Large Language Models (LLMs) and agentic workflows. The container base images that power these applications are filled with inherited security debt. Echo, an Israeli startup, has secured $35 million in Series A funding to address this issue by revolutionizing how cloud infrastructure is constructed. With a total funding of $50 million to date, Echo is on a mission to replace the chaotic open-source supply chain with a secure-by-design operating system.

The latest funding round was led by N47, with contributions from Notable Capital, Hyperwise Ventures, and SentinelOne. However, the real story lies in Echo’s ambitious objective to transform the way cloud infrastructure is built.

The foundation of the modern internet lies in container base images. These images serve as the operating system for applications in the cloud. Similar to how a new laptop comes with an OS like Windows or macOS pre-installed, base images provide the essential components for running applications. However, most base images are open-source and are created by community volunteers, leading to security vulnerabilities due to unnecessary tools and settings.

Echo’s CTO, Eylam Milner, compares using software from the open-source world to plugging in a random computer found on the sidewalk. Traditional methods of addressing vulnerabilities in base images involve scanning for bugs and patching them. However, Echo’s research reveals that official Docker images often contain over 1,000 known vulnerabilities upon download, creating a significant security risk for enterprises.

Echo’s co-founder and CEO, Eilon Elhadad, draws parallels to history, likening Echo to Red Hat’s professionalization of open-source Linux for the corporate world. Echo aims to be the “enterprise AI native OS,” providing a curated foundation for the AI era.

Echo’s approach involves rebuilding images from scratch rather than scanning for vulnerabilities post facto. This “software compilation factory” process includes compilation from source and hardening the images to adhere to SLSA Level 3 standards. This meticulous process results in a cleaner, secure-by-design operating system free of known CVEs.

As the industry experiences an “AI vs. AI” security arms race, Echo leverages AI agents to autonomously manage vulnerability research. These agents continuously monitor new CVEs, conduct unstructured research, and self-heal affected images. This automation enables Echo to maintain over 600 secure images at scale, a feat that would typically require a large team of security researchers.

For Chief Information Security Officers (CISOs), Echo represents a shift towards zero vulnerabilities by default, saving developer hours and ensuring secure production workloads. Major enterprises like UiPath, EDB, and Varonis are already benefiting from Echo’s solution, securing their infrastructure as they transition to agentic workflows.

Echo’s pricing model is based on image consumption, scaling with how software is built and shipped. This innovative approach to cloud infrastructure construction may define the next generation of DevSecOps, allowing enterprises to trust their underlying infrastructure without the need for manual management.
