EEOC investigating Nike over alleged discrimination against White workers
The U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) has recently launched an investigation into Nike, the popular athletic apparel manufacturer, over allegations of discrimination against White workers. According to a court filing by the EEOC, Nike is suspected of engaging in discriminatory practices against White employees, applicants, and training program participants in areas such as hiring, promotion, workplace development, and layoffs.
A spokesperson for Nike responded to the allegations by stating that the company has cooperated with the EEOC and provided necessary information in an effort to address the issue. The spokesperson described the probe as a “surprising and unusual escalation” and emphasized Nike’s commitment to fair and lawful employment practices, stating that they take these matters seriously and are dedicated to complying with anti-discrimination laws.
The EEOC’s investigation focuses on Nike’s diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) objectives for 2025. The agency filed a legal action in federal court in Missouri after Nike failed to provide requested information, including criteria for employee layoffs and data on workers’ race and ethnicity. The EEOC, established under Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, aims to prevent employment discrimination based on various factors, including race.
Andrea Lucas, nominated as chair of the EEOC by President Trump, highlighted the agency’s renewed focus on enforcing civil rights laws, particularly Title VII. The investigation into Nike is part of a broader effort by the EEOC to ensure equal treatment in the workplace.
This probe by the EEOC follows a series of similar investigations initiated by the U.S. Department of Justice under the Trump administration. These investigations targeted organizations and state governments that implemented DEI programs, with a focus on protecting White individuals against alleged “reverse discrimination.” Former DOJ employees have raised concerns about the potential impact of DEI initiatives on equal treatment in the workplace.
In conclusion, the EEOC’s investigation into Nike underscores the importance of fair and equitable employment practices. As the agency continues to scrutinize allegations of discrimination, it remains committed to upholding anti-discrimination laws and promoting diversity and inclusion in the workplace.
