Espresso network launches ESP token with 10% airdrop amid Ethereum layer-2 debate

The Espresso Network has recently made a significant transition to a permissionless proof-of-stake blockchain with the introduction of its ESP token. This move marks a new era for the network, allowing for wider participation in securing the network and distributing a community airdrop representing 10% of the total token supply.

The launch of the ESP token coincides with the network’s shift towards a proof-of-stake consensus mechanism. The Espresso Foundation has allocated a total supply of 3.59 billion ESP tokens, with 10% set aside for a community airdrop aimed at early ecosystem participants and users of Espresso-integrated rollups.

According to Ben Fisch, CEO and co-founder of Espresso Systems, the eligibility for the airdrop was determined based on various criteria to reward early participation and adoption of the Espresso network. The foundation has also allocated additional token supply to contributors, investors, future ecosystem incentives, and long-term network sustainability, with most allocations subject to vesting.

Espresso serves as a coordination and finality layer for rollups, which operate as independent execution environments. The network is specifically designed to support layer-2 blockchains rather than compete with them at the execution layer. With fast finality being a crucial factor for rollups, Espresso aims to provide quick and secure finality for transactions, finalizing rollup blocks in about six seconds on average compared to Ethereum’s 12-minute-plus finality window.

As the Ethereum ecosystem debates the future role of layer-2 networks, Espresso remains confident in the demand for application-specific rollups, especially from institutions and consumer platforms. The network believes that regardless of Ethereum’s roadmap, there will continue to be a need for scalable solutions like Espresso to support the growing ecosystem of decentralized applications.

In conclusion, Espresso’s transition to a proof-of-stake blockchain and the launch of the ESP token mark a significant milestone for the network. With a focus on fast finality and support for layer-2 blockchains, Espresso is poised to play a crucial role in the evolving landscape of blockchain technology.
