Eternity Film Review: A Sweet, High-Concept Romantic Comedy
Eternity: A Charming Romantic Comedy Worth Watching
Eternity is a delightful romantic comedy that breathes new life into the genre with its original and imaginative take on the classic love triangle. Directed by David Freyne, the film stars Elizabeth Olsen in a standout performance that brings a spark to the screen.
The story follows elderly couple Joan and Larry, who find themselves in a peculiar afterlife scenario after passing away. Larry, played by Miles Teller, wakes up in his thirties, reliving the happiest years of his marriage to Joan. Meanwhile, Joan, portrayed by Elizabeth Olsen, is faced with a dilemma when her first husband Luke, played by Callum Turner, appears at the afterlife junction after waiting for her for 67 years.
The film explores themes of love, loss, and second chances as the characters navigate their choices in the afterlife. With a screenplay by Pat Cunnane that topped The Black List, Eternity is a refreshing take on the afterlife genre, offering a mix of humor, heart, and nostalgia.
One of the standout elements of Eternity is its unique setting at the afterlife junction, a quirky hotel and exhibition center filled with stalls offering various afterlife options. From Beach World to Nudist World, the film explores a range of imaginative scenarios that add depth to the story.
Elizabeth Olsen shines as Joan, infusing the character with energy and charm. She is supported by a talented cast, including Miles Teller and Callum Turner, who bring depth and emotion to their roles. Da’Vine Joy Randolph and John Early also deliver engaging performances as the Afterlife Coordinators, adding a comedic touch to the film.
Director David Freyne deserves credit for creating a cohesive ensemble and stretching the budget to bring the afterlife world to life. The film’s nods to queer culture and fresh take on traditional rom-com tropes make it a standout in the genre.
While Eternity may have some flaws, such as missed opportunities for exploration and predictable moments, it ultimately delivers a heartwarming and entertaining experience. As we approach the holiday season, Eternity offers a cozy alternative to traditional Christmas movies, providing a warm and uplifting story for audiences to enjoy.
Eternity opens in the UK on 5 December, inviting viewers to immerse themselves in a charming and imaginative world that celebrates love, life, and the choices we make.
