Ethereum Chooses India for Flagship Event

The Ethereum Foundation has made a significant announcement regarding the location of Devcon 8, the premier global gathering for Ethereum builders, researchers, and creators. The event is set to take place in Mumbai, India in the fourth quarter of 2026.

Why India Was Chosen for Devcon 8

Foundation officials highlighted that India has emerged as a frontrunner in crypto adoption, attracting the most new crypto developers globally in 2024. This growth has positioned India as one of the fastest-growing developer hubs, driven by a young and tech-savvy population, as well as robust grassroots communities.

The selection of Mumbai as the venue for Devcon 8 was influenced by the strength of India’s local Ethereum ecosystem. Initiatives such as EthMumbai, Devfolio, and prominent global projects like Polygon have positioned the country as a powerhouse for Web3 innovation. These initiatives have fostered hackathons, builder programs, and developer training pipelines, resulting in the emergence of numerous contributors to the Ethereum ecosystem.

The Ethereum Foundation emphasized that India’s expansion is primarily community-driven, distinguishing it as one of the most authentic and dynamic Web3 environments globally.

A Big Moment for India’s Crypto Ecosystem

Hosting Devcon 8 represents a significant milestone for India, especially amidst challenging regulatory and tax environments. Despite a 30 percent tax on crypto gains and a 1 percent TDS on most trades, the crypto activity within the country remains vibrant.

Local exchanges like CoinDCX continue to operate within India’s regulatory framework, while the government explores blockchain initiatives across various states. The introduction of the e-Rupee CBDC and the country’s digital payment infrastructure, spearheaded by UPI, underscore the expanding landscape of blockchain innovation in India.

The Ethereum Foundation expressed gratitude to its Devcon hosts in Argentina and extended an invitation to the global community to convene in Mumbai in 2026. Devcon is described as a homecoming for longstanding Ethereum builders and an entry point for newcomers seeking to engage with the ecosystem.

With India leading in developer onboarding and crypto adoption, Devcon 8 is anticipated to be a pivotal edition of the event. The foundation believes that this move will propel Ethereum’s global expansion and foster collaboration between India’s builders and the broader Web3 community.
