Ether’s crash leaves $686 million gaping hole in trading firm’s book

Trend Research, a trading firm led by Jack Yi, found itself in a precarious position this week as their bullish bet on ether turned into a multi-million dollar loss. The firm had taken a $2 billion long position on ether by borrowing stablecoins from DeFi giant Aave, using ether as collateral.

As ether’s price continued to drop, Trend Research’s leveraged bet became increasingly risky. The stablecoin collateral backing the position was shrinking while the fixed debt remained the same, leading to significant losses. With ether plummeting to $1,750, the lowest level since April 2025, Trend Research was forced to liquidate over 300,000 ether in an attempt to control the damage.

Jack Yi, the head of Trend Research, described the sales as a risk-control measure in response to the market volatility. Despite the significant loss, Yi remains optimistic about the future of the crypto market, predicting that ether could reach over $10,000 and bitcoin could exceed $200,000. He emphasized that the current market conditions present a buying opportunity, with volatility being a defining feature of the crypto space.

Yi’s post on X highlighted the firm’s commitment to navigating the challenges of the market while maintaining a positive outlook for the future. He acknowledged the risks associated with trading in the crypto market but expressed confidence in the potential for a rebound following periods of volatility.

The incident serves as a reminder of the unpredictable nature of the crypto market and the risks involved in leveraging bets on digital assets. Despite the loss, Trend Research remains hopeful for a resurgence in prices and is taking steps to adapt to the ever-changing market conditions.

In conclusion, Trend Research’s experience underscores the importance of risk management and adaptability in the volatile world of cryptocurrency trading. As the market continues to evolve, it is essential for traders to stay vigilant and make informed decisions to navigate the challenges and opportunities presented by digital assets.
