EU leaders talk coordination over Greenland as Trump readies for Davos

The ongoing dispute between the United States and its NATO allies regarding the sovereignty of Greenland is expected to take center stage at the World Economic Forum in Davos this week. President Donald Trump reiterated his stance on Monday, emphasizing the importance of American ownership of the Arctic island for national and global security.

Following a conversation with NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte, Trump took to social media to announce plans for a meeting in Davos to address the Greenland issue. Despite the opposition from Danish and Greenlandic officials, Trump remains steadfast in his pursuit of acquiring the mineral-rich territory.

European leaders have been vocal in their opposition to Trump’s ambitions, emphasizing the need to respect the sovereignty of Greenland and Denmark. European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen highlighted the importance of transatlantic cooperation in addressing security concerns in the Arctic region.

Meanwhile, Danish and Greenlandic officials have been engaging in discussions with NATO to address security challenges in the Arctic. Danish Defense Minister Troels Lund Poulsen emphasized the significance of the Greenland issue for Europe and NATO’s future, underscoring the complexities of the situation.

Trump has cited concerns about Chinese and Russian influence in the Arctic as justification for U.S. sovereignty over Greenland. While a 1951 defense agreement already grants the U.S. military access to the island, Trump believes additional measures are necessary to safeguard American interests.

In response to recent military deployments in Greenland by European nations, Trump imposed new tariffs on goods from those countries, escalating tensions and prompting fears of a trade war. European leaders condemned Trump’s actions, warning of the repercussions on transatlantic trade relations.
