European defense companies must collaborate to succeed

European defense companies are urged to take the lead in collaborating to achieve independence from the U.S. security umbrella, according to Leonardo’s CEO in an interview with CNBC.

Roberto Cingolani emphasized the need for European defense companies to leverage their capabilities and technical skills without relying solely on government intervention in the fragmented sector.

He emphasized the importance of companies taking the initiative in the process of aggregation, encouraging European governments to follow suit. This approach, he noted, leads to significant benefits and enables companies to enhance their efficiency and profitability.

Highlighting Leonardo’s collaboration with BAE Systems and Mitsubishi Heavy Industries in the Global Combat Air Programme (GCAP) to develop the Tempest stealth fighter, Cingolani emphasized the importance of strategic partnerships in the defense industry.
