Ex-Labor Secretary Robert Reich Says This 1 Obsession ‘Will Be Trump’s Downfall’
Former Labor Secretary Robert Reich has issued a stark warning in a recent essay, published on Substack, suggesting that President Donald Trump’s increasing control over the U.S. economy could ultimately lead to his downfall.
Reich, who served under President Bill Clinton and is known for his vocal criticism of Trump, pointed out the president’s attempts to influence the Federal Reserve, gain stakes in key industries, and reward loyal businesses. He argued that these moves are shifting the economy away from traditional supply and demand dynamics towards decisions made by Trump himself.
Describing this shift as a form of “state capitalism” or even “fascist capitalism,” Reich expressed concern that Trump’s arbitrary and unpredictable decisions are causing unease in the private sector. This, in turn, could deter investment in the U.S. economy, increase global lenders’ risk assessments, and potentially lead to a dangerous mix of inflation and recession known as ‘stagflation’.
In his closing remarks, Reich suggested that Trump’s authoritarian control over the economy could be his undoing, stating, “If nothing else brings him down, his authoritarian control over the economy surely will.”
The article also includes a call to action to support media organizations like JS, emphasizing the importance of defending journalism in the face of challenges to press freedom.
