Ex-NFLer LeShon Johnson found guilty in federal dog-fighting case ever

Former NFL player LeShon Johnson was recently convicted of six felony counts related to his involvement in a federal dog-fighting bust earlier this year. A federal jury in Oklahoma found the former Giants running back guilty of violating the federal Animal Welfare Act by possessing, selling, transporting, and delivering animals for fighting ventures. Johnson now faces a maximum penalty of five years in prison and a fine of up to $250,000 for each count.

The Department of Justice announced that Johnson will be sentenced at a later date, and authorities seized a total of 190 dogs in connection with the case. Johnson has surrendered the dogs to the government, which is seeking forfeiture of the animals. Attorney General Pamela Bondi condemned Johnson’s actions, stating that he profited from the suffering of innocent animals and will face severe consequences for his crimes.

Johnson, who had nearly 200 “pit bull-type dogs” for his operation known as “Mal Kant Kennels,” was charged in March in what was described as the largest seizure of dogs in a federal case. Prosecutors presented evidence during the trial that Johnson bred and trafficked dogs for the purpose of fighting them.

FBI Director Kash Patel expressed the bureau’s stance against organized animal fighting, stating that those engaging in such despicable crimes will face justice. Johnson, who spent five years in the NFL and played for the Packers, Cardinals, and Giants during his career, now faces a significant legal battle as a result of his involvement in dog fighting.

The case serves as a reminder of the commitment of the Department of Justice and law enforcement agencies to protect animals from abuse. Johnson’s conviction underscores the consequences of engaging in illegal activities that cause harm to innocent creatures. The collaborative efforts of law enforcement resulted in the seizure of the dogs and the prosecution of Johnson for his involvement in the cruel practice of dog fighting.
