Ex-NYPD cops sentenced for sexually assaulting passed-out woman

Two former NYPD cops have been sentenced to probation for sexually assaulting an incapacitated woman after a night out at a Bronx bar. Julio Alcantara-Santiago, 40, and Christian Garcia, 32, received their sentences at Bronx Supreme Criminal Court as part of a plea agreement for the assault that took place on July 9, 2023.

Alcantara-Santiago, visibly nervous in an orange blazer and pinstriped pants, was sentenced to six years of sex offender probation. On the other hand, Garcia, dressed in a navy suit, was given one year of probation and ordered to complete a behavioral treatment program.

The survivor of the assault, whose identity remains undisclosed, recounted the harrowing experience in a victim impact statement read aloud in the courtroom. She had gone out with co-workers to Zona De Cuba lounge in Grand Concourse, where they had drinks on the rooftop. The next thing she remembered was waking up in a stranger’s home being sexually assaulted by two men.

Despite her fear and terror, she managed to escape the situation the next morning and sought help at a local Bronx hospital, where she underwent a rape kit examination and spoke to authorities. Alcantara-Santiago and Garcia were arrested in April 2024 after surveillance footage linked them to the crime.

In her powerful testimony, the survivor expressed the trauma and pain she had endured in the three years since the assault. She emphasized the importance of speaking out against perpetrators, regardless of their title or position of authority. She urged others to come forward and seek justice, emphasizing that no one should be afraid to report such heinous crimes.

The survivor’s bravery and resilience were acknowledged by Judge Ralph Fabrizio, who commended her for sharing her story. An order of protection was also issued for Alcantara-Santiago and Garcia to ensure the survivor’s safety.

Alcantara-Santiago had a previous arrest for allegedly groping a woman at the Hard Rock Cafe in Yankee Stadium in September 2022, but the case was dismissed by Bronx prosecutors after surveillance footage was reviewed.

In conclusion, the survivor’s message of empowerment and resilience serves as a reminder that no one should be silenced or intimidated by those in positions of power. Victims of assault should feel empowered to speak out and seek justice, regardless of the circumstances. With so many responsibilities and distractions vying for our attention, taking time for oneself can often fall by the wayside. However, self-care is crucial for maintaining overall well-being and mental health.

Self-care encompasses a wide range of activities that promote physical, emotional, and mental well-being. This can include anything from getting enough sleep and exercise to engaging in activities that bring joy and relaxation. It’s all about taking the time to prioritize your own needs and happiness.

One of the most important aspects of self-care is setting boundaries. This means knowing when to say no to additional responsibilities or commitments that may cause undue stress or overwhelm. It’s important to recognize your limits and not overextend yourself, as this can lead to burnout and exhaustion.

Another key component of self-care is practicing mindfulness. Mindfulness involves being present in the moment and paying attention to your thoughts and feelings without judgment. This can help reduce stress and anxiety, as well as improve overall mental clarity and focus.

Physical self-care is also essential for overall well-being. This includes getting enough sleep, eating a balanced diet, and engaging in regular exercise. These habits can help boost energy levels, improve mood, and reduce the risk of chronic illnesses.

Emotional self-care is equally important. This can involve engaging in activities that bring joy and fulfillment, such as spending time with loved ones, pursuing hobbies, or practicing gratitude. Taking the time to nurture your emotional well-being can help improve relationships and overall happiness.

In today’s fast-paced world, it can be easy to neglect self-care. However, taking the time to prioritize your own well-being is essential for maintaining overall health and happiness. By setting boundaries, practicing mindfulness, and engaging in physical and emotional self-care, you can improve your quality of life and better cope with the stresses of daily life. So take some time for yourself today and engage in activities that promote self-care and well-being. Your mind and body will thank you for it.
