Ex-US diplomat John Negroponte’s daughter Sophia sentenced in friend’s drunken murder

Sophia Negroponte, the adopted daughter of former President George W. Bush’s Director of National Intelligence, John Negroponte, has been sentenced to 35 years in prison for the fatal stabbing of her friend, 24-year-old Yousuf Rasmussen, after a drunken argument inside a Maryland Airbnb six years ago. The sentencing was handed down by Montgomery County Circuit Court Judge Terrence McGann following Negroponte’s second-degree murder conviction at trial in November.

This was a retrial after Negroponte’s 2023 conviction on the same charge was overturned. The 35-year sentence mirrored the initial sentence imposed after the first trial in 2023. Montgomery County State’s Attorney John McCarthy stated that this was an appropriate and just outcome considering the seriousness of the crime and the findings of two separate juries.

Sophia Negroponte, one of five Honduran children adopted by John Negroponte and his wife, Diana, after Negroponte’s appointment as US ambassador to Honduras in the 1980s, had attended the same high school as Rasmussen. The tragic incident occurred after a night of drinking when an argument escalated, leading to Rasmussen’s death from multiple stab wounds, including a fatal blow that severed his jugular.

Responding to a 911 call, county and city officers arrived at the Airbnb property in Rockville, Maryland, to find Negroponte covered in blood and lying on top of Rasmussen, apologizing for her actions. Despite claiming not to remember the attack, Negroponte admitted to removing a knife from Rasmussen’s neck during the altercation.

John Negroponte, a prominent figure in US intelligence and foreign policy, was appointed as the nation’s first intelligence director by President George W. Bush in 2005. He later served as deputy secretary of state and held ambassadorial positions in countries such as Honduras, Mexico, the Philippines, the United Nations, and Iraq.

The tragic outcome of Sophia Negroponte’s actions serves as a reminder of the consequences of violence and the importance of accountability in the justice system.
