‘Exceptionally dangerous’ temps will freeze NYC into February

The snow isn’t going anywhere anytime soon in New York City. Forecasts predict that the snowpack will stick around through at least February due to exceptionally dangerous temperatures in the teens and 20s, which could prevent any significant melting for days.

According to AccuWeather meteorologist Alex DaSilva, the mercury isn’t expected to rise above freezing well into February. Highs will remain in the low 20s with single-digit lows, making it exceptionally dangerous for anyone spending prolonged periods outside. Residents are advised to limit outdoor exposure and dress warmly.

The cold temperatures will persist throughout the week, with highs not expected to break 26 degrees even as February arrives. Lows will range from 11 to 24, with clouds prevailing and only a few bursts of sunshine expected.

With temperatures well below freezing, it will be difficult to remove the foot or more of snow blanketing the five boroughs. DaSilva expects the snow to stick around through the weekend and likely into part of next week. Some light melting may occur when the sun returns on Monday and Tuesday, but overnight lows could lead to icy conditions.

The upcoming cold is about 20 degrees below average highs for this time of year, with a re-freeze risk for wet surfaces or slush on Monday and Tuesday nights. Additionally, there is a possibility of more snow on the horizon as conditions are right for a coastal storm over the weekend.

The recent weekend storm left much of the Big Apple buried in over a foot of snow. Parts of Staten Island saw 14 inches, the Bronx saw 13.5 inches, Brooklyn saw 12 inches, and Manhattan saw 11.4 inches in Central Park. Nassau County on Long Island saw 15.3 inches, while Westchester County to the north saw up to 17 inches in some places.

Overall, New Yorkers can expect the snow to stick around for a while, with the cold temperatures making it challenging to remove the snow from streets and sidewalks. Residents are advised to use caution and be prepared for icy conditions in the coming days.
