Exclusive | DOJ surging prosecutors to Minnesota to bring fraudsters to justice – Bondi vows ‘severe consequences’ for those convicted
The Justice Department is taking decisive action to address rampant fraud in Minnesota, with Attorney General Pam Bondi announcing the deployment of a team of prosecutors to crack down on criminals who are “robbing American taxpayers.” Bondi emphasized the severity of the consequences that will be delivered to perpetrators of fraud schemes in Minnesota and expressed readiness to deploy to other states facing similar issues.
Currently, the DOJ is actively investigating multiple cases of fraud in Minnesota, including the Feeding our Future scandal, where fraudsters siphoned off funds intended for feeding hungry children during the pandemic. The department is also looking into fraud in programs like Housing Stabilization Services (HSS) and Early Intensive Developmental and Behavioral Intervention (EIDBI), which aim to provide assistance to vulnerable populations.
According to the DOJ, 98 defendants, 85 of whom are of Somali descent, have been charged in Minnesota fraud-related cases. The department has conducted over 1,750 subpoenas, executed more than 130 search warrants, and conducted over 1,000 witness interviews as part of their investigations, resulting in 64 convictions.
Independent journalist Nick Shirley recently shed light on fraudulent day care centers in Minnesota, sparking further investigations by the DOJ. Several facilities featured in Shirley’s video are now under active scrutiny, with one building connected to 13 defendants facing fraud charges.
In addition to prosecutors, the FBI is deploying forensic accountants and data analytics teams to Minnesota to investigate potential links between elected officials and terrorist financing. This multi-agency effort underscores the commitment to rooting out fraud and holding perpetrators accountable.
The intensified focus on fraud in Minnesota comes as Governor Tim Walz ended his bid for re-election amid mounting scrutiny of the state’s massive fraud scandals. The collaborative efforts of law enforcement agencies aim to restore integrity and protect taxpayer funds from those seeking to exploit the system for personal gain.
