Exclusive | Ex-Jay Z partner Damon Dash’s film biz sells for measly $100 at auction as creditors swarm
Former hip-hop mogul Damon Dash’s film production company was recently sold at auction for a mere $100.50 in an attempt to offset the $1 million he owes from defamation lawsuits. The auction, held on Tuesday, saw only one bidder, Mike Muntaser, CEO of Muddy Water Motion Pictures, who submitted the winning bid.
Dash, who co-founded Roc-A-Fella Records, declared bankruptcy in September, claiming to have very little money to his name despite owing a significant amount in taxes, child support, and other debts. A large portion of his debt, around $5 million, stems from civil lawsuits with Brown’s clients.
The production company for sale, Poppington LLC, included rights to Dash’s most well-known film, “Honor Up,” which featured performances by Dash himself, Cam’ron, and his cousin Stacey Dash. Other films owned by Dash include the sequel “Too Honorable,” a documentary titled “Welcome to Blakroc,” and a personal film titled “We Went To China: Our Search For Like Minded Individuals.”
Attorney Chris Brown, who has won a civil lawsuit against Dash, expressed disappointment that no outside bidders offered more for the film collection. He mentioned that Cam’ron had recently criticized “Honor Up” as “wack” in an Instagram post.
Muntaser, the winning bidder, sees his purchase as a “jab” at Dash, whom he blames for years of litigation. He believes Dash is bitter and egotistical, refusing to take responsibility for his actions. Muntaser and filmmaker Josh Webber have successfully sued Dash twice for defamation and recently filed a third defamation suit against him.
Brown, the attorney, emphasized the need for Dash to stop making slanderous statements about his clients. He mentioned that Dash’s behavior is puzzling, especially considering his past success in the music industry.
In the end, Muntaser hopes for Dash to reflect on his actions and make positive changes in his life. Despite the challenges and legal battles, he hopes that Dash will find guidance and move forward in a more constructive manner.
