Expect a lot more pro-crime judges on the bench if Mamdani wins in November
An infamous serial bank robber with a staggering 34 prior arrests has once again been released back onto the streets after being caught for a new string of heists. Cornell Neilly, also known as the “Burberry Bandit” due to his distinctive attire, was apprehended for holding up five banks in August and September, despite being on parole for a previous bank robbery charge in 2021.
Despite prosecutors’ pleas for bail or bond, Manhattan Judge Jeffrey Gershuny decided to release Neilly on supervised release, disregarding his extensive criminal history. This decision is particularly concerning considering Gershuny’s recent behavior, including brandishing a personal firearm during a court hearing. It is alarming that a judge with such questionable judgment was appointed to the bench by former Mayor Bill de Blasio in 2019.
The leniency shown towards repeat offenders like Neilly raises concerns about the potential impact of future judicial appointments. If Zohran Mamdani is elected as the next mayor, it is likely that more judges with similar leniency towards criminals will be appointed, leading to a justice system that prioritizes second chances over public safety.
The selection of criminal court judges is a direct reflection of the mayor’s influence on the justice system. With Mamdani potentially appointing judges who share Gershuny’s leniency towards criminals, there is a risk of a justice system that fails to hold repeat offenders accountable for their actions.
Ultimately, the consequences of appointing judges who prioritize leniency over justice could have far-reaching implications for the safety and security of New York residents and businesses. It is crucial to consider the impact of judicial appointments on public safety and ensure that the justice system prioritizes accountability for criminal behavior.
