Explosion in Madrid from suspected gas leak kills at least 1 and injures 25

MADRID — A tragic incident unfolded in Madrid as a suspected gas leak explosion in a building took the life of one individual and left 25 others injured, according to emergency services in the Spanish capital on Sunday.

A man’s body was discovered by rescue workers, aided by search dogs, in the aftermath of the explosion that occurred on Saturday, authorities confirmed.

Firefighters have indicated that a gas leak may have triggered the explosion, although police continue to investigate the exact cause, as reported by Spanish news agency EFE.

Following the blast at approximately 3 p.m. on Saturday, firefighters successfully rescued four individuals trapped in the debris of the three-story building. The explosion resulted in severe damage to a cafe, a store, and surrounding properties, said firefighter chief Javier Romero.
