FAA slashes flights in, out of Newark Airport through end of 2025

Newark Liberty International Airport to Maintain Reduced Hourly Flights Through End of Year
Newark Liberty International Airport will continue to experience significantly reduced hourly flights until the end of the year, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) confirmed on Friday. This decision comes as the airport grapples with ongoing construction projects and staffing shortages that have been causing disruptions in travel operations.
According to the FAA, only 28 arriving and departing flights will be allowed per hour on weekends from September 1 to December 31. During the rest of the time, there will be a limit of 34 arrivals and departures until October 25. These restrictions are necessary to ensure safety and alleviate flight delays caused by the challenges in staffing and equipment at the airport.
The recent completion of the reconstruction of Runway 4L-22R, which had been closed since April 15 for a $121 million repair project, has contributed to easing some of the delays. The reopening of this runway, ahead of schedule, has provided much-needed relief as the airport had been operating with only two open runways during the construction period.
In an effort to address the issues at Newark Airport, the FAA has implemented measures to update outdated technology and improve telecommunication connections. These upgrades are expected to enhance the efficiency of operations and minimize disruptions in the future.
Despite the progress made with the runway construction and technology updates, Newark Airport has faced a series of challenges this year, including air traffic controller shortages and technology glitches. A blackout incident in April, caused by a burnt-out copper wire, left thousands of travelers stranded, leading to criticism of United Airlines, the airport’s largest carrier.
United Airlines has been accused of contributing to overcrowding at the airport, prompting the CEO to promise more affordable travel options for passengers. The airline has been working to address the issues and improve the overall travel experience for customers.
As the FAA continues to monitor and make improvements at Newark Liberty International Airport, passengers are advised to stay informed about any updates and changes in flight schedules. The goal is to ensure a smoother and more efficient travel experience for all passengers passing through the busy airport.
