Family of 22-year-old nursing student allegedly killed by ex sues for $150M from bondsmen who sprung him from jail days earlier

The tragic story of Lauren Johansen, a nursing student from Mississippi, has shaken the community to its core. Her life was cut short at the young age of 22, allegedly at the hands of her ex-boyfriend, Bricen Rivers. The details of the case are chilling, with Johansen’s body found mutilated in the trunk of her car in 2024.

Rivers, who had previously been arrested for kidnapping and beating Johansen in Nashville, was released on bond despite pleas from her father to keep him behind bars. The decision to release Rivers proved to be fatal, as he is now accused of murdering Johansen shortly after his release.

The lawsuit filed by Johansen’s family against the Tennessee bond companies that facilitated Rivers’ release seeks $150 million in damages. The family alleges that the companies failed to prevent Rivers from violating the terms of his bond agreement, despite tracking him with an ankle monitor. Rivers crossed state lines into Mississippi multiple times, where Johansen was studying nursing, without any action taken by the bond companies.

The heartbreaking discovery of Johansen’s body, wrapped in trash bags and sheets, paints a grim picture of the tragedy that unfolded. Her father, Lance Johansen, has expressed his anguish over the loss of his daughter and the failure of the bond companies to protect her. He questions why Rivers was released in the first place, knowing the danger he posed to his daughter.

Rivers, now facing a murder charge, had a history of violence towards Johansen. He had previously been accused of trapping her in his car and beating her unconscious during a vacation in Nashville. Despite the seriousness of these allegations, Rivers’ bond was eventually posted by Brooke’s Bonding and On Time Bonding, the companies now facing legal action from the Johansen family.

The lawsuit also names a private monitoring firm and two companies that provided collateral for Rivers’ bond. The case highlights the importance of accountability in the justice system and the devastating consequences of overlooking warning signs of potential danger. Lauren Johansen’s untimely death serves as a stark reminder of the need for better protection of victims of domestic violence and stricter enforcement of bond agreements.
