Fan who fell 21 feet onto field at Pirates game now awake

Kavan Markwood, the young man who tragically fell onto the field during a Pirates game at PNC Park, is showing signs of improvement according to Jennifer Phillips, the organizer of his GoFundMe page. Phillips shared that Markwood, a former college football player, has been making significant progress since being admitted to Allegheny General Hospital in critical condition on Wednesday.

In a heartfelt update on the GoFundMe page, Phillips expressed gratitude for the outpouring of support and generosity from the community. She mentioned that while Markwood still has a long road to recovery ahead, his recent progress has been nothing short of miraculous. The GoFundMe campaign set up for Markwood has raised over $28,000 since the accident, showcasing the solidarity and compassion of the fans.

Pirates chairman Bob Nutting also expressed his devastation over the incident, emphasizing that the Pirates organization and its fans are like a family. He urged everyone to come together, support one another, and keep Markwood and his loved ones in their thoughts and prayers during this challenging time. Nutting also extended his gratitude to the first responders who acted swiftly in response to the incident.

The Pirates conducted an investigation into the incident, interviewing witnesses and examining credit card receipts to piece together the events leading up to Markwood’s fall. It was determined that Markwood had not purchased any alcohol during the game, but had consumed two beers provided by others in his group. Conflicting accounts from fans regarding Markwood’s behavior before the fall were reported, with some stating that he appeared intoxicated while others mentioned that he was not noticeable until he celebrated a hit from outfielder Andrew McCutchen.

The fall, which occurred shortly after Markwood celebrated McCutchen’s hit, was labeled as an accident by Pittsburgh Public Safety. As Markwood continues his recovery journey, the community remains united in offering support, prayers, and well wishes for his full recovery. The incident serves as a reminder of the importance of coming together in times of adversity and standing by one another as a strong and resilient community.
