Fans mock NBA, ABC for putting ‘CGI’ trophies on Finals court

The NBA and ABC made a controversial decision during Game 2 of the NBA Finals by digitally inserting images of the Larry O’Brien Trophy onto the court. This move sparked a variety of reactions on social media, with many fans poking fun at the decision.

During Game 1, there were no decals on the court, not even digital ones. However, for Game 2, the league and ABC alternated between an image of the trophy and a logo that read “The NBA Finals presented by YouTube TV.” This change drew criticism from fans who felt that the digital trophies looked low-res and glitchy.

The NBA has not featured physical decals on the court since 2020, and large physical decals of the trophy haven’t been seen on the floor of the Finals since 2009. Despite the attempt to add visual elements to the court, fans were not impressed with the digital insertions.

Social media was abuzz with reactions to the digital trophies. Fans expressed their disappointment with the decision, calling for a more visually appealing way to showcase the NBA Finals insignia and the Larry O’Brien Trophy. Some even joked that NBA Commissioner Adam Silver simply said “here damn” and put a CGI trophy logo on the court.

After the widespread discussion on social media, Adam Silver addressed the issue, admitting that he hadn’t thought much about it until seeing the reaction online. He acknowledged the importance of visual elements in a media-driven culture and hinted that the league might reconsider its approach to court design.

As the debate continued, the Thunder won Game 2, leveling the series at 1-1. With all the attention on the digital trophies during the broadcast, it remains to be seen if any changes will be made ahead of Game 3. Fans will be eagerly watching to see if the NBA responds to the feedback and adjusts the court visuals for the remainder of the Finals.
